Sangla in Himachal Pradesh is known as the light pass and is called so because the valley receives sunlight during the day. There are snow clad mountains surrounding and the Kinner Kailash peak can be seen as well. The Baspa River flows through the valley and that is why it is also known as the Baspa Valley.
1. Camping in the mountain forests
There are a number of camps in Sangla Valley that offer tent and cottage accommodation. The camps organise various adventure activities which range from treks to rappelling to river crossing to rock
climbing which includes lunch in the forest. For enthusiasts who love the mountains and exploring the forests there these are a great exploration.
2. Walking with the Himalayas in the distance
The walks through Sangla Valley are beautiful as there are the orchards, cedar trees, and fir trees all around. The mighty snow-clad Himalayan mountains in the distance also add to the aura of a walk to remember. One can also sit and watch as yaks graze all around. While on the walk, one can do the Rakcham trek which is a beautiful walk through the Himalayan trees. The glacier trek takes one to the snowy regions of the mountains.
3. Fishing in River Bapsa
For those who love angling, the Bapsa river is full of trout which can be caught with make-shift fishing equipment. While at it, one can also opt for a finger or toe dip in the icy cold river water which will send shiver down your spine. The river water is crystal clear and one can easily spot the trout. For those who do not want to fish, they can gaze at the beautiful shoals of trout, which is a great experience.
4. Attend the Fulaich Fair
The fair is held every year between August and September. The festival of flowers has a lot of fanfare involved which includes traditional dances and songs. The Kinnauris wear traditional costumes and perform certain rituals for departed loved ones. The festival helps one see the hidden talent of the otherwise shy people of Sangla.
5. Eat apples
Sangla is known for its apple cultivation and one can pluck a fruit from the tree itself. The apples are so much in plenty that locals do not mind if tourists pluck a few fruits which they do not charge them for. The apples are very juicy and sweet which are a real treat for apple-lovers.
6. See snowfall
Many people like snow and Sangla is the perfect place to experience snow fall. Visiting the valley in November will ensure that one gets to experience the first snowfall of the year. The entire area is covered in a white blanket and tourists find the extreme cold too cold but there is also the chance to play with snowballs and snowmen. If there is a cloudburst which happens often the roads leading to and from Sangla become too treacherous, waiting for the snow to stop and then
heading back is the best option.
7. Visit nearby villages
Chitkul, the last town on the Indian border, after which the Tibetan border begins is near Sangla and one can go there and explore the end of India on this side. Also one can visit Batseri, Karchem, and Kalpa, all of which are located close to Sangla. Each of these villages offers a beautiful view of the Himalayas and of the valley.
